2003 East West TransAtlantic World Record
February 24, 2003
Monday February 24, 2003- American skipper Steve Fossett and his international crew of 12, aboard 125′ maxi catamaran PlayStation, set a new world record for the East West TransAtlantic World Record/Christopher Columbus Route.
Their time of 9 days, 13 hours, 31 minutes and 18 seconds covered the same route as Columbus in 1492, PlayStation averaged 16.93 knots over the official 3884 nautical mile record course. The total distance sailed, with weather detour, was 4704 nm with an across the water average of 20.5 knots.
The previous record (10 days 14 hours, 53 mins, 44 secs) for this course was set by Skippers Bruno Peyron (FR) and Grant Dalton (NZ) on the 110′ catmaran, Cub Med, in June, 2000.
This new record gives Steve Fossett and PlayStation dual Atlantic records including the West-East Atlantic Record, a sprint from New York to the UK in 4 days, 17 hours, 28 minutes in October 2001.
